Description

With astonishing control and tonality, the Korg Opsix MK II checks in as a synthesizer to cover enormous ground and get things done. This digital synth operates on exciting new levels for a model of its size for any player to dive in the deep end and indulge in colorful synthesis creations.

Based on the sound engine of its predecessor, the Opsix MK II will make for a welcome reunion to fans of the previous version. What the MK II brings to the table in initial rollout is its expansion from the originator's thirty-two voices to an encompassing sixty-four. New sonic routes become available with a new sonic engine kicked into high gear, familiar to experienced Opsix users, surely, but with exciting new territory to trek.

The original Opsix Operator Mixer streamlined FM synthesis. With this new version, the synthesis capabilities are broadened through added functionality and a more efficient workflow. The heart of the Opsix MK II is its Operator Mixer – a series of six faders and six knobs highlighted by red and blue lights. This design interface, practically begging to be experimented with, opens the field for players to get into an exploratory mode while also offering an easy in into the nitty-gritty synthesis design process that compels so many. Alongside the Operator Mixer's interface, six data entry knobs align next to the OLED display and correlate with different parameters per each preset. In addition, a range of analog-style filters and four-pole low-pass, high-pass, band-pass and band-reject filters appear to offer added dimensions of customization.

Going even deeper, the Opsix MK II offers three blocks of thirty types of high-definition effects to be used in the synthesis process. Drop in some familiar favorites like phaser, chorus and delay to some truly transcendental flavors like shimmering reverbs to expand the Opsix experience and reach new musical equations. The Opsix goes beyond traditional keyboard-style playing, however. An onboard step sequencer plays with polyphonic motion sequencing, meaning up to six notes can be held in each step in addition to recording parameter changes via motion tracking. The modulation capabilities of the Opsix allow for deeper playing and interactivity with six operator modes and forty preset algorithms – along with the ability to craft originals. Customization builds with the utilization of the MOD section that works separately from the operators at the end of the signal chain. Three envelope generators, three LFOs and twelve virtual patches build upon the voices capable from the Opsix MK II even further.

As a compact, standalone FM synthesizer, the Opsix MK II assembles a rigorous synthesis experience that is both easy to approach and easy to lose yourself in. In either instance, the Opsix MK II is an excitingly fun piece for exploration and experimentation.
