More about Universal Audio

Universal Audio, established in 1958 by Bill Putnam Sr., has a rich history of innovation in the recording industry. Putnam, known for his work with Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, and Ray Charles, was instrumental in developing the modern recording console, multi-band audio equalizer, and vocal booth. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to create Universal Audio, Studio Electronics, and UREI, which produced iconic equipment such as the LA-2A and 1176 compressors, and the 610 tube recording console.

In 1999, Bill's sons, James Putnam and Bill Putnam Jr., re-founded Universal Audio with the mission to reproduce classic analog recording equipment and develop new digital recording tools that capture the essence of vintage analog technology. Their talented team of engineers and digital modeling experts have created award-winning UAD Powered Plug-Ins, known for their authentic analog emulation.

One of Universal Audio's crowning achievements is the Apollo audio interface, introduced in 2012, which has become a global standard for professional music production. Artists like Kendrick Lamar, Coldplay, and Dr. Dre have used Apollo to record their albums. Headquartered in Scotts Valley, California, Universal Audio continues to produce classic analog gear while pushing the boundaries of digital recording technology, staying true to their legacy of innovation and quality.
