The Scoop
Streaming service Paramount+ has picked up more than fifty episodes of MTV’s music series, MTV Unplugged. The series, famed for noteworthy performances particularly throughout the 1990s, earned acclaim for its presentations of artists such as Nirvana, Eric Clapton, R.E.M., Alice in Chains, and more. Paramount+ has included in its collection of Unplugged episodes the Grammy-winning Nirvana performance, one of the last Alice in Chains performances with singer Layne Staley, and the Oasis Noel Gallagher-fronted performance, among many other notable acts including Paul McCartney, Mariah Carey, and Bob Dylan.
Our Take
The ‘90s are back – or at least that’s what Cosmopolitan says. But really, with the Gallagher brothers together at Wembley Stadium, a new Jurassic Park reboot in the works, and Tony Hawk and Kurt Cobain’s kids having a kid, were the ‘90s ever really gone? There’s value in nostalgia, especially in the nostalgia that you weren’t really around to experience in the first place – and that’s okay. MTV Unplugged is undoubtedly a gem of ‘90s television and music culture, so it’s not a bad thing to have their performances recirculated into the public conscious. Previously, you could only really find them in pieces online or in your weird secondhand stores. Remember that time you found Field of Dreams on DVD in that one store that one Saturday for a dollar? Remember how you told yourself you’d definitely watch it again? Where’s that DVD now?
